気温もあがり、一気に梅雨入りしそうな予感です。

レッスンへ来るちびっこたちの様子でその日が暑かったかどうかよくわかります。

帰宅する時間がなく、直接レッスンへ来る子供さんの持ち物を見ていると、その数の多さにいつもながら驚かされます。

私が子供の頃は水筒なんて持って行っていませんでしたが、今は水筒持参は当たり前です。

ランドセルは空の状態でも十分重たく、そのうえ水筒、その日使うお道具諸々。徒歩登校がほとんどなのでアスファルトの上を歩いて登校する小学生が本当に気の毒です。

水筒持参をするのは、水道の水なら美味しくないかもしれないし、誰かが異物を混入させる可能性があるからでしょうか。

塩分補給であれば塩タブレットを持たせる手もありますが、あの重たい水筒を持っているのをみると何とも言えない気持ちになります。

アメリカの学校や公共の場ではお水が飲める、アレを設置している場所が多いです。

（英語でコレをなんて言うでしょうか？！）

 

ですが、それでさえも近年の新しい建築では設置をしないようになっているそうです！おどろき！！

衛生面でも気になるようですし、コスト面も折り合いがつきにくいようです。ヨーロッパでも然り。

結局Water bottleを持って行くのが標準になっているのかもしれませんし、スクールバスに乗って楽々登校するのなら荷物が多くても平気ですね！

It’s getting warmer now, which means it’s time for BBQ (bar-be-que)!

Where I’m from many families have a gas BBQ in their back yard that they use to grill food for dinner throughout the year.  However, when the weather is nice many people use the grill to have BBQ parties for friends and family.  Often people will bring uncooked meat that the whole party can cook and enjoy.

Common food includes chicken, steak, hamburgers, and hot dogs.  My family also likes to cook shish kebabs, which are like a giant-sized やきとり.

A very popular time for BBQ is in a week or so, when Americans have a three day weekend because of a holiday called Memorial Day.  Memorial Day is considered the start of summer, and when I was growing up it was always when the swimming pool opened for the year.  Usually my family would go to the pool and cook using the pool’s BBQ grills on Memorial Day weekend.

Last week in class, I told many of you about my trip to Okinawa during Golden Week. I probably mentioned root beer, which is a kind of soda. There is a fast food chain called A&W in Okinawa, and they specialize in root beer.

Well, this week I got a nice birthday gift from one of our students!

It has the word “beer” in the name, but root beer is usually not alcoholic. You can find it in supermarkets and restaurants all across North America. It was traditionally made with sassafras root (see the picture below) combined with many spices and flavorings, but these days it really depends on the company.

Some of the most famous makers of root beer are A&W, Barq’s, and Mugs, but there are many others.

Root beer is a little hard to find in Japan, but you can sometimes see it at import stores. A&W is relatively common, probably because of the Okinawa connection.

I think I’ll go have one right now!

英語に何年触れていても、初めて、奇妙なきっかけで知る単語やフレーズは多いものです。

今回は生徒さんへお出しした宿題の中の「和製英語OR片かな英語」で、Powerpointという単語はイギリス英語で「コンセント」を指すと知りました。

へー！！！PowerPointというとMicrosoftの専売特許かと思っていたくらいです。

そうしているとふと出くわした単語があります。

最近よく行くキャンプ場はそれぞれのサイトを星座で表していて、好んで私たちが取るのが「かに座」です。

それを英語でCancerと書いてありました。

そう、あのCancer「ガン」です。

ずっと気になっていたものにふとしたきっかけでこれも知ることになりました。

紀元前のギリシャの医者がガンをカニに例えたところから始まっているとのこと。古代でも乳がんは体の表面からわかる癌だったらしくその時代から外科らしい治療がされていたらしいのです。その癌の細胞の広がり具合が蟹の手足を広げたようなものだったと…

さてどこまで本当かわかりませんが、どうやらこの「蟹」と「癌」が同じ単語で表されているのは英語だけではないそうです。

ドイツ語でもKrebsと言い、蟹と癌を指すそうです。

私たちのテントですが、雨女の私にふさわしく、今回のキャンプもまた土砂降りとなりました。

5月も気づいたら来週からは後半です。

気温もあがり、春よりも初夏らしい日が出てきました。

扇風機とエアコンの活躍の時期です。

嫌なものとしては、蚊の訪れです。

そろそろ蚊対策です！

日本ではおなじみの蚊取り線香(mosquito coil)から、新しい型のものであればバポナがあります。

北米ではそこまで出入り口の蚊対策をする必要はないので、庭で食事をする際やキャンプでは蚊の嫌がる匂いがするキャンドル（シトロネラというレモンに似た成分 Citronella）を使う程度です。

商業施設であればお馴染みの、アレですね。

これを英語でどう言うでしょうか？

答えは：bug zapperです。

zapという単語がとある音をあらわしています。いかにも、という音です！
