Last weekend, I went to a small town in Okayama called Hattoji with Dave, Hal, and Dave and Ayumi's boys. Many of you have heard me talk about Hattoji in years past, because we go there almost every year. It's nestled in the mountains near the border of Hyogo, making it a great spot to go leaf-viewing in the autumn. 

The villa has a new thatch roof this year, so it looks nicer than ever. Besides hiking in the surrounding area, we also made dinner together and played games around the irori at night. Hattoji is still one of my favorite places for a weekend getaway.

紅葉の季節ですね！皆さんは紅葉を見にどこか出かけられましたか。私は生徒さんから書写山がオススメと聞き、今年は姫路の書写山へ行ってきました。書写山のことを聞くまでは存在も知らなかったのですが、行ってみるとたくさんの人で賑わっていました。外国人観光客の方も思った以上に多かったです。

書写山は山麓からロープウェイで4分ほどで到着します。上に登ってからは、境内摩尼殿、本堂に到着するまでは結構な距離があるので、良いエクササイズになります。「ラスト・サムライ」、「関ケ原」などの撮影場所にも使われたことがあるそうです。

 「紅葉狩り」を直訳できる英語はないので、「紅葉を見に行った」と表現するしかありません。

I went to Mt. Shosha to see the autumn leaves.

 「紅葉」は表現の仕方がたくさんあります。”autumn / fall leaves”, “autumn / fall colors”, “autumn / fall foliage”とさまざまです。もみじは”Japanese maple”です。「葉っぱが色づきます。」と表現したい時は、

The leaves turn red / yellow.

というように、”turn”という「変化する」という動詞を使って、「葉っぱが赤色や黄色に変化する」と表現します。

先週日曜日は岡山市の一大イベント「おかやまマラソン」の第三回が開催されてました。

晴れの国おかやまはくもりのお天気で気温も寒くなく、ランナーにとっては汗ばむくらいだったかもしれません。

ランナーたちは前日に受付を済ませないといけないたえ市内がかなり渋滞していましたが、当日を含め無事に終了したようです。

NEOの生徒さんも複数の方がエントリーし、そのクラスメートの人たちが沿道で応援に行ったそうです。

このマラソンに出るという表現ですが、参加する=participate, take part inと言いたくなる人が多いのですが、get in a marathonやenter in a marathonと言った方が自然です。

具体的にボストンマラソンや東京マラソンなど名前が決まっている場合はthe Boston marathonのようにthe がつきます。

私は友人の配偶者が3人もエントリーしており、それにかこつけて岡山に集合し、夫レースに妻ビュッフェという有意義な日曜日を過ごしました。

Last month, I talked to many of my students about my trip to Vietnam. I went to Hanoi and other places in the north part of the country the first week of October, and it was a great experience. I traveled alone, stayed at hostels and homestay houses, and did a lot of hiking and exploring. It was a real adventure.

In Hanoi, I stayed in an area called the Old Quarter. There were cars, bicycles, motorbikes, and tourists everywhere. The traffic was chaotic and there were almost no traffic lights, so crossing the street was a challenge.

After that, I went trekking in Sapa, an area in the mountains which has some of the most beautiful scenery I’ve ever seen. I learned a lot about the H’Mong people, an ethnic minority that lives in Sapa. They have their own customs, language, and food. 

Finally, I spent some time in Ninh Binh, a city near Hanoi. There are a few well-known tourist attractions in the area, including caves, rivers, and temples. 

 

 

I can’t wait to go back to Vietnam! Next time, I’ll probably explore Ho Chi Minh City and the south part of the country.

パーティの建物内には調理室とオーブンがあります。料理は1時ごろに始める予定で、5：00ぐらいから食事を始められたらと思っていますが、七面鳥の焼きあがりによります。お手伝いをしてもいい、と思われる方は1時ごろにお集まりください。調理には興味のない方は4時ごろに参加していただいても結構です。材料はこちらで準備いたします。

内容としては：七面鳥、その中に詰める詰め物（Stuffing)、マッシュドポテト、クランベリーソース、バターロール、パンプキンパイなどです。参加に興味のある人は別紙にお名前を記入してお早めにお申込ください（NEO以外の人でもOK）。人数にあわせて材料の準備を行います。

場所：コミュニティハウス（中央図書館近く）
時間：11月26日（日）1:00pm～8:00pm 好きな時間に参加してください。原則大人の方になります。
持ち物：好きなアルコール類はご持参ください。エプロンなど。
費用：2000円

We are having our 12th annual Thanksgiving Party on Sunday, November 27nd. The party will be at the Koki Community House (岡山市岡南コミュニティハウス) near my school. We will be cooking 4 turkeys and all of the trimmings (mashed potatoes, pumpkin pie, cranberry sauce, etc.). 

We will start cooking at noon and eating around 4:30 or 5ish. If you want to help us cook (or just hang out and drink), please do so. If you can't come right at noon, that is ok, but we ask that everybody help set up the dining room and help with the cleanup after we eat.

We are laying out the dough to buy everything and rent the space, so we are asking everyone to kick in 2000 yen each, which will include all of the food, dessert (!) and soft drinks (BYOB for alcohol).

Space at the community center is limited, so the party is limited to the first 35 people who sign up. Reserve your spots ASAP, we were at full capacity last year.

There is coin parking, but if you are planning to drive, let me know, up to 5 cars can park outside of the coin parking area for free. It is easy to get to by bus also.
