Yesterday was the presidential election in America, so the Yomiuri Shimbun contacted me to get an American's opinion of the election. I had a telephone interview with Ayumi. I spoke in English and Ayumi interpreted my answers into Japanese for the reporter. We talked for over 10 minutes, but only one short quote was picked for the article. You can see it in the picture.

I voted by mail about a month ago. I didn't vote for Trump or Clinton, I voted for the Libertarian candidate, Gary Johnson. His policy ideas are the closest to my polict ideas. Of course, I knew that he had zero chance of winning, but I wanted to vote my true feeling instead of picking one of the major candidates.

I think Trump will not be as extreme as the media portrays him. I think relations with Japan will continue as before. The only change might be with TPP, since Trump is opposed to it.

パーティの建物内には調理室とオーブンがあります。料理は1時ごろに始める予定で、5：00ぐらいから食事を始められたらと思っていますが、七面鳥の焼きあがりによります。お手伝いをしてもいい、と思われる方は1時ごろにお集まりください。調理には興味のない方は4時ごろに参加していただいても結構です。材料はこちらで準備いたします。

内容としては：七面鳥、その中に詰める詰め物（Stuffing)、マッシュドポテト、クランベリーソース、バターロール、パンプキンパイなどです。参加に興味のある人は別紙にお名前を記入してお早めにお申込ください（NEO以外の人でもOK）。人数にあわせて材料の準備を行います。

場所：コミュニティハウス（中央図書館近く）
時間：11月27日（日）　　1:00pm～8:00pm　好きな時間に参加してください。原則大人の方になります。
持ち物：好きなアルコール類はご持参ください。エプロンなど。
費用：2000円

We are having our 11th annual Thanksgiving Party on Sunday, November 27nd. The party will be at the Koki Community House (岡山市岡南コミュニティハウス) near my school. We will be cooking 4 turkeys and all of the trimmings (mashed potatoes, pumpkin pie, cranberry sauce, etc.). 

We will start cooking at noon and eating around 4:30 or 5ish. If you want to help us cook (or just hang out and drink), please do so. If you you can't come right at noon, that is ok, but we ask that everybody help set up the dining room and help with the cleanup after we eat.

We are laying out the dough to buy everything and rent the space, so we are asking everyone to kick in 2000 yen each, which will include all of the food, dessert(!) and soft drinks (BYOB for alcohol).

Space at the community center is limited, so the party is limited to the first 35 people who sign up. Reserve your spots ASAP, we were at full capacity last year.

There is coin parking, but it might close at 5pm. We are asking for special permission to keep it open late, but we don't know yet. If you are planning to drive, let me know, up to 5 cars can park outside of the coin parking area. It is easy to get to by bus also.

毎年この時期は大学受験が近い高校生と、そろそろ高校の志望校をしぼってくる中学生受験生の時期です。

英検でステップアップを目指して内申書にできるだけ有利に書けるように頑張る子も増えます。

高校受験を控えている男子Y君は、英語は好きだけれどテストの点はあと一歩。ところが運動部を引退してから日々自宅学習を6時間したら英語のテストがいきなり98点を出してきました。

そんな中、高校を卒業後大学へ進学することに興味がないAちゃんがお悩み中でした。

英語はしたいけれど、大学へ進んで勉強したいのではない。

たまたまカナダのエージェントでスタートポイントさんが来られていたので、仮に18歳という年齢でカナダで勉強する場合を話してもらいました。

高校を終了後の進学では、diplomaやdegreeの違いを理解してもらうことです。

アメリカでは4年制大学はuniversityまたはcollegeいずれの単語もOKです。ここを卒業したら学位degreeが取得できます。

2年制に近いものがcommunity collegeにあたり、取った単位を以て4年制大学へ編入するケースも多いです。

ところが隣国カナダでは制度が違うようで、universityが4年制大学にあたり、2年制（短大のようなもの）がcollegeになるとのこと。degreeは取得できず、diploma（卒業証書、免許や資格）までです。

日本で言う資格試験もcertificateやdiplomaに近いでしょうね。Licenseと訳す人もいますが、医師免許や運転免許といったものがlicenseにあたります。

さて、その高校生Aちゃんは進路をどうするのでしょうか。

Halloweenがここまで日本で人気になるとは10年前には思いもよりませんでした。

パーティをするのに仮装していないといけないと参加できないよ、と伝えると嫌がるキッズの多かったこと。

Jack-o'-lanternを作るための西洋かぼちゃを調達するのも大変で、大手スーパーをめぐってもかぼちゃの説明に困り、入手できるとわかったら値段は今の3倍以上。

そのHalloween partyですが今年は人数も多く46名の参加でした。

仮装するとは、一目見て何に仮装しているかがわかることが「仮装」costumeではないのです。

講師の中でもHalが来ていたCostumeを見た大人の生徒さんは多少疑問があったようです。

それ、なに？ghost？ゴースト？それってゴースト？

ghostのイメージが日本語と英語でのずれもあるからですね。

日本語に訳そうとすると「幽霊」「お化け」のどちらもですが、「幽霊」は人間、「お化け」は人間以外の生き物や物体の魂の怨念。

英語でのghostは白いシーツを頭から被ったようないでたちで、顔は有名な絵画ムンクの叫びのようです。
