Last weekend, I went with the boys (Tatsuki & Satoshi) and a group of friends to Hattoji. Where is Hattoji? Hattoji is past Wake, near the Aida Circuit reacetrack, very close to Hyogo Prefecture. What is in Hattoji? Hattoji is an old style mountain village, where most of the houses are very old, with thatched roofs. Why did you go to Hattoji? 

There is an "International Villa" there, which is just an old farmhouse that people can rent to spend the night. There is a small kitchen, so we brought food to cook for dinner and breakfast. Some friends ust went for the day, other people stayed overnight with us. The weather was not so good, it was foggy and rainy, but the Autumn colors were beautiful and the boys enjoyed walking around the country roads.

最近気づいていましたが、小学生で左利きの子どもさんが増えたことです。

私の時代では、左利きの子はいてもある程度暗黙のルールとして、少し大きくなる前に右手を主に使うようにするか両利きになる子が多かったものです。

右利きへ矯正する必要性がなくなったためでしょうか、自主性をそんちょうするためでしょうか、左手を使う子どもさんを見かけても珍しいことではなくなってきています。

私の2歳児が左利きのようで、お箸のトレーニングが始まりましたがこんな左利き用のものを見つけました。

左利きだと、お箸やペンだけでなく、本当はハサミ、パソコンのマウスなど、どちらを使うか悩ましいものです。

NEOでも、講師たちのうちManamiさん、Dave、退職したRJが左利き。

この話をしていたら、ちょうど2名いらっしゃった生徒さんの息子さんお二人とも左利きだそうです！！

日本の場合はお習字をする際に左利きだと「うったて」が難しいですね。

この「うったて」、岡山弁だということをご存じでしたか…？

It’s November, which means that the basketball season has started in America.  Basketball is my favorite sport, so I am happy to be able to watch games every night.  The hockey and football seasons are also underway, and the baseball championship just finished, so it is a very busy time for American sports fans.  In each of the four most popular sports leagues there are 30 teams (32 in football), so fans have a lot of chances to watch and cheer for their favorite teams.  In larger cities like New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles there are usually two teams for each sport, so people are divided in their favorite teams.

Basketball is my favorite sport, but football is by far the most popular sport in the country.  The championship game, called the Super Bowl, is the most watched TV program in America every year.  More than 100 million people watch each year – almost the entire population of Japan!

Notice that the lowest number of people watch soccer.  Soccer is the most popular sport worldwide, but it really isn’t popular to watch in the US – although it is getting more and more popular, especially on the west coast in places like Seattle, where the average attendance at games is over 40,000 people.  The average attendance for a pro football game is about 80,000 people. 

Recently, Forbes – a financial magazine, released their list of the most valuable sports teams in the world.  Two of the top five were soccer teams, two were football teams, and one was a baseball team.

Baseball has gotten less and less popular over the years – more and more people want to watch football or basketball, and young people aren’t playing baseball as much in school.

 

この日曜日は、第一回おかやまマラソンの日でした。

生憎の雨予報でしたが、前日からずっと曇り＆小雨程度。

市内の交通規制も気になっていました。

NEOでもマラソンへ参加されると言われていた生徒さんが4名。

気温は11月にはあり得ない22度の最高気温。暑くて途中半そでで過ごしたほどです。

私は学生時代の友人たち7名と会うため岡山イオンへ向かいました。

日曜の午前中にこれだけ車が少ないのも珍しかったのですが、交通規制による混乱もない様子。

店内も人が想ったよりも少なかったので周辺のサービス業は良くも悪くもかなり影響を受けたのではないでしょうか。

JRはマラソン後に帰宅する人達で逆にごった返していたようですが。

週明けにマラソンへ出た方たちの話しが楽しみです。

果たして「第二回」はあるのでしょうか！？

I had this at the Chinese restaurant after getting a good recommendation from one of our students.

外はパリパリ、中はモチモチ。どう英語で表現するんだろうと想いながら食べていました。

crispy...munchy...?　アジアン料理の食感表現は難しいものです。

私は映画を見るのが好きです。シアトルにいる時もよく映画を見に行きました。今もたまにイオンに映画を見にでかけます。最初は何とも思っていなかったのですが、よく考えると北米と日本では映画館のシステムが結構違うなとふと思いました。

 アメリカの映画館事情を書いてみます！日本と比べてみてくださいね。

 ①席は自分で指定できない（座席番号がない）。逆に言えばどこに座ってもいい。

②映画のチケットは（州や地域によって違うかもしれません）約10ドルなので、日本の1800円に比べると大分安い。

③フード、ドリンクを食べた後は映画上演後そのまま席に残しておいていい。

④おもしろいシーンではみんな声に出して笑う。日本では笑いをおさえますよね!

⑤ドリンク、フードの量はもちろん多いですが、ポップコーンのバター（風味?）を自分で好きなだけかけれる機械がある。これを見た時は衝撃でした!

⑥映画が終わった瞬間にほとんどの人がすぐに帰り、エンドロール(film credits)を最後まで見ない。

私が思いつくのはこのぐらいですが、他にももっとあるかもしれません。文化によってこれだけ差が出るのもおもしろいですよね。
