I have never carved a jack-o-lantern. This statement always gets a surprised reaction from my students. Growing up in the Southern Hemisphere, Halloween is in the Spring, not Autumn. A lot of the seasonal activities tied to Halloween are not celebrated back home. But we still celebrate Halloween by dressing up in costume, going trick or treating, and eating candy. We can still enjoy Halloween even if it is not in Autumn.
Some holidays throughout the year and strongly tied to the seasons, and yet we have found ways to enjoy them in our own way in different parts of the world. It always comes as a shock to many people but for us it is normal and just our own way of living. Christmas is associated with winter and snow, but we have replaced snow with sand and beaches. It works for us and is not strange at all. Rather a cold snowy Christmas feels strange to us. What I think it important is to understand that holidays are celebrated in all kinds of ways around the world. There is not a ‘correct’ way to celebrate them. I also think this is a great conversation topic when talking with people from around the world. Find out how they celebrate worldwide holidays, and how they differ in their own cultures.

中学生で英語を授業で習い始めるとこの「不思議の国のアリス」の一節を習った人も多いでしょう。
今週のNEOはまさにこんな感じ。一週間ずっとこの一節が頭を巡っていました。
ネイティブ講師が二人同時にコロナでダウン。生き残った講師Jと私でできるだけ分担し、Marinaがそれをサポート。いきなり気温も戻り暑さでカーッ。足りない人数でこなすので息つく間もなく、１日が終わるとすぐ次の日がやってきました。私も自宅に陽性者がいるので自宅でもくつろげずヘロヘロ。マスクも生徒さんのアドバイスで強力なN95を装着。効果は高いけど同時にマスクの中が暑くて余計に疲れます。
レッスンを中止・変更依頼の連絡をしまくり、都度謝るのですが、生徒さんが皆さん天使のようなお返事を下さるんです。どんだけいい人たちなんだ？？？
ご飯を作ってきてくれるTさんや、私の好物のドーナツをもってきてくれたSさん。個人の携帯番号を記して「いつでも夜中でもいいんで気晴らしにかけてもらってもいいですよ」とか、「今からすぐお手伝いに行けますよ！」とか。いつでも待ってますからとか。Sweetな言葉だけで十分心が慰められます。
リップサービスも盛りだくさんだったので「お世辞の腕があがりましたね！」とお返事したところ、そのお返事がこちら。

しんどい時に笑いをもらうと元気がでました。笑うことなんて忘れてた。これから「笑えるエピソード」でも検索して、笑って元気をもらってこよう。
そうそう、笑える弁当エピソードを検索してみてください。抱腹絶倒なものもあれば、涙がにじむものもありますので。心が疲れているときに癒されます。
岡山の有名な猫を知っていますか？
高梁にいますよ！
山の頂上にある雲海で有名な備中松山城に「さんじゅーろー」という猫城主がいるんです。
城のホームページによると、見つかる前に腕白な「さんじゅーろー」は山の周りを一人で冒険していたらしいです。まだ猫城主になる前のちっちゃい時、数週間失踪したこともあって、城の管理人を心配させたそうです。
今、８歳になった「さんじゅーろー」は毎日境内でゆっくり過ごしています。私たちが行った時は、入り口に隣接している小屋でくつろいで伸びていました。沢山の写真を撮らせてくれて、そのあと外に出て、日光浴をし始めました。全く猫の気ままな生活だなと思いました。
雲海は早朝しか見えないらしいですが、季節と天気によるそうです。早起きが苦手な私は雲海は無理だと思いました。しかし、日本で一番標高が高い城で、やっぱり上からの景色は昼でもとても綺麗でした。急な山の木々を通り抜けたら、立派な城壁が突然現れて印象的でした。姫路城などに比べたら、境内はかなり狭いですが、行きたい所へすぐ行けます。
それに、さんじゅーろーもいるから、備中松山城がすぐに私は気に入りました。
